Caring for your
Christmas tree
Use these helpful tips and facts to keep your tree looking fresh, full and festive all season long.
Real Christmas trees are living plants, so a little care goes a long way. With the right spot, plenty of water and a few simple checks, your tree can stay green, fragrant and beautiful right through to the New Year – without covering your floor in needles.

1. A Fresh Cut
If you are placing your tree in a water-holding stand, use a saw to remove about one inch from the bottom of the base. This removes the sap seal the tree has created to prevent moisture loss.
Removing this allows your tree to drink water freely and keeps your needles soft and scented throughout the festive season.
We can do this for you, but you must get it into water within an hour, or the sap will have resealed the base.

2. Location is everything!
Position your tree away from direct heat sources, such as radiators or fireplaces, to keep it fresh for longer.
Once in place, leave your tree to stand for 24 hours before decorating (if you can resist)! This allows the branches to drop and reveal the tree's true shape.
Remember that heat is your enemy when it comes to keeping things fresh and green. So it is recommended that you use cooler, energy-efficient LED lights on your real tree.

3. Use a water-holding stand
Without constant access to water, the base quickly seals over with sap again, preventing any further hydration and causing needles to drop prematurely.
It will drink quite a lot of water in the first few days, so its best to keep checking the reservoir.
Keeping it topped up with fresh tap water is the best way to maintain that lush, vibrant look all through the holiday season.
